As it falls back into place

The room erupts with shouting. It’s so loud I can’t make out any words. Veronica’s mouth drops open, and she stares at me.

“You can’t do that.” Rachel gets up from her seat on the couch opposite us. “That’s cheating.”

“Cheater, cheater, cheater,” everyone in the room chants.

“No, it isn’t.” Karen gets to her feet. “You’re all sore losers.”

“Bitch,” Veronica says.

I laugh and stand, swaying on my feet a little. “Is that your best comeback?” But my voice gets drowned out by the noise.

Veronica narrows her eyes and clenches her fists at her sides. Jessica stands, and I now have her on one side of me and Karen on the other. I follow Jessica’s gaze around the room where it stops and rests on Josephine. Jessica’s sister shakes her head and rolls her eyes.

Levi jumps onto the coffee table, knocking over a few cups and a bottle of vodka. Thankfully, the lid is on.

“Stop!” he yells.

The room quietens to a murmur, and I look up at Levi. He glances down at me, a half-smile touching his lips. He goes to say something, but now that the noise has died down, Karen beats him to it.

“When are you going to get over the fact that Katie is smarter than you?” Karen’s voice travels around the room. She folds her arms and glares at everyone.

Veronica takes a step towards me, but I stand my ground. Karen and Jessica do, too.

“You cheated,” Veronica says, pointing a finger at me.

“Katie drank her shots.” Levi jumps off the coffee table and lands in front of me. “It’s her turn.”

Veronica grits her teeth. “This better be good.” She takes up her seat again on the arm of the couch.

Karen sits where I was, and Jessica squeezes in beside her, but I stay standing. I do not want to be sitting for this. In case I need to run away really quickly. Running away seems like a good idea, actually, because I don’t want to do this.

“Levi, truth or dare?” The words are out of my mouth, and a second later I want them back.

The room erupts with chatter and cat-calling. Someone lets out an ear-piercing wolf whistle, and I cringe.

What the hell am I doing? What am I going to ask him if he says truth? What will I dare him if he doesn’t? I thought maybe I was prepared for this, but it turns out I’m not. All eyes are on me, staring at the boy in front of me. The one I’ve been in love with my entire life. The one I have so many questions for, but they’re ones I don’t want to ask in front of a room full of rich-kid snobs.

I should never have come to this party.

Levi sits on the coffee table and stares up at me, that lopsided smile still playing on his face. He rests his hands on his knees and licks his lips.

“Truth,” Levi says.

My mouth opens, and I close it again. Truth? Shit!
